The café is built into the shell of a long disused Japanese built rice barn. Breezes flow through the space and insects fly in through ventilation spaces in the roof. The walls remain untouched and it was one of these walls that I fell in love with. The weight, colour, textures, and the sunlight falling across the wall at different times of the day gave me the inspiration I needed to create this work. The work was an attempt to make an artwork that told the story of not only the barn / café but its location in a hot spring area close to the mountains.
